Designing With Web - Part 3: week 1
Rethink flying experience for entrepreneurs using sound design
Group 62
Project 1: The sound freeze app
Context
Who never missed an ad at the airport because he had his headphones?
At the airport, essential information is transmitted during the waiting period such as number of the boarding gates, closing of the boarding gates, closing of the baggage drop-off point, plane delays or security alerts.
Entrepreneurs are often required to fly for their work. Because at the airport the waiting time can be long, they may use their headphones to video-conferencing or to listen to music to save or pass the time.
But then how not to miss these essential announcements?
Target
Our project targets entrepreneurs.
As entrepreneurship is rising all around the world, the way people tend to work is rapidly changing. Less are those who work from their office, and people therefore often work in less formal spaces, such as their homes, coffeshops, or working spaces.
Entrepreneurship usually comes with a lot of travelling, especially in this day in age where most parts of the planet are easily accessibles for all. Our project therefore relies on the fact that a freelance worker can be in the need of being able to work at any time during long trips, and particularly in airports, whilst he waits for his plane to take off.
Service offered
In an airport, entrepreneurs use headphones in order to listen to music or to stay in communication with their team. So, the painpoint is that they miss any alerts made by the airport concerning their plane.
Our app offers the opportunity for them not to miss any new alerts concerning their plane. Any sound transmitted on the headphone will be automatically stop and the app will provide the alert to the user.
Our project is an application that is based on a partnership with flying companies.
Thus, our app able the user to use his headphone in order to work or something else, not being worried by any new alerts he could miss.

Flight Aware : https://flightaware.com/
FlightAware is a digital aviation company and operates the world's largest flight tracking and data platform. This app can give you all the information you need to prepare a trip but also to follow your itinerary, manage your stops, anticipate delays, plan trips with connections and know the airports of departure or arrival.
The main difference from Flightaware to our projet is that we make the alter in the headphones while Flightaware push notification on the phone. By using the sound, our projet for alter passengers is more direct and noticeable.
The Flight Tracker : https://www.flightview.com/flighttracker
The Flight Tracker app that offers details on arrival and departure time, terminal info, seat maps, and alerts for gate changes, delays, and cancellations. For the frequent flyer, it also gives you the option to make notes on specific flights, label frequent routes, and sync the app with flights on your mobile calendar. It also lets you set customized reminders before flights.
The main difference from Flight Tracker to our projet is that our projet push the alter by sound which is published by airplane while Filght tracker contentrates on the flight airline.

Project 2: The Personalizer
Context
A flight can sometimes be very long and boring. Music can help pass the time. But how to listen to music on a plane when there is no internet connection?
Most people download music before their flight so that they can continue to listen to it during the flight without any trouble. However, this operation is often tedious because it takes time and asks to know in advance what kind of music we want to listen during the flight.
Target
Our project concerns entrepreneurs. However, it works fine with everybody ! The idea is to enhance the flying experience for the user, and by creating a personalizing playlist for the user, thanks to the answers he gave previously to the quiz, we transform an annoying experience into a better one.
Service offered
Our application allows people to launch a personalized music download 24 hours before their flight.
Indeed, before their flight, the users receive a notification in order to fill a questionnaire allowing us to personalize the downloading of their music.
This questionnaire includes several categories:
- How long will your trip last ? : this information allows us to know what length of music we must download (duration must be longer to anticipate any delay or need additional music).
- Where is the starting point and the destination of your trip ? : this information allows the app to provide the music related to those countries passing by.
- How is your feeling now ? : our app will download the music to meet your feeling, providing our users customization of the music.
- Now, we would like to know a little more about you ... : How old are you ? Where are you from ? Are you a male or a female ?
- Do you need to work during the trip ? : if you need to work during the flight, our algorithm will play the music which helps to improve effectiveness.
Our project is an app that is based on a partnership with spotify.

- Emirates App: https://www.emirates.com/
Emirates App is the application that allows the user to access to lots of information concerning its flight, but it also allows him to acces to various contents, such as videos, music, etc. Emirates has won World’s Best Inflight Entertainment award for the 14th year in a row at the Skytrax World Airline Awards 2018.Thus, this application is a good example of a relative project, but our project differentiate to this one because we don't just offer a list of music to our user, we create a tailored one. Also, our app is in partenership with spotify so no need for the user to exit his favourite app and go on an other one.
- Apple Music
Apple Music is a music and video streaming service developed by Apple Inc. Users select music to stream to their device on-demand, or they can listen to existing, curated playlists. Apple music would be our main concurrent because it offers personalizing playlists to its users, but their system is less developed that ours and they don't offer any kind of tailored playlists for flights like we do.
